Brewing the tea...

The Bloke Behind The Code

15 years, countless systems, and still actually enjoying what I do.

Dan Benton-Smith
2010 — 2019

Started with websites

Built bespoke sites for agencies, startups, and businesses across the UK and Australia. Back when having a good website was still impressive.

2019 — Present

Then came enterprise

Financial services and enterprise systems — the kind that handle real load, audits, and deadlines you can't move.

The Journey

Started building websites when that was actually impressive. Now I build enterprise systems that handle millions in transactions. The fundamentals haven't changed - solve problems, build things that work, don't be a dick about it.

2010 - 2019

Freelancing & Contracting

10 years building bespoke websites and web applications. Worked with agencies, startups, and established businesses across the UK and Australia. Cut my teeth on everything from WordPress sites to complex e-commerce platforms.

2019 - Present

Enterprise & Financial Systems

Made the jump to enterprise software engineering in the financial services sector. Currently Senior Software Engineer in London, building and maintaining the systems that keep the business running.

From building websites to engineering enterprise systems. From WordPress to Python calc engines. From solo freelancer to technical leader. The scale changed, but the approach stayed the same - understand the problem, build the right solution, make it maintainable.

What Makes An Engineer

Here's what I reckon separates a proper engineer from someone who just writes code:

  • Creative problem solving - finding solutions to problems that haven't been solved before
  • Thinking outside the box - not just implementing the first thing that comes to mind
  • Building for the future - secure, scalable, maintainable code that someone else can actually work with
  • Understanding the 'why' - not just what needs doing, but why it needs doing
  • Knowing when to keep it simple - over-engineering is as much a sin as under-engineering
"Anyone can write code. Engineering is about solving the right problem the right way."

The Human Side

Because apparently employers like to know you're an actual person:

Family Man

Got kids, love spending time with them. They're the reason I work hard and the reason I don't work stupid hours.

Classical Guitarist

Accomplished classical guitarist. Even give lessons when time allows. There's something about music that scratches a different creative itch than code.

Football Tragic

Spurs fan and Southend United supporter. Yes, I attend both grounds. Yes, I know what that says about my judgment. No, I won't hear any slander about the mighty Shrimpers.

How I Work

What you can expect if you work with me:

Direct communication - I'll tell you what I think, and I expect the same back
Pragmatic approach - right tool for the job, not the flashiest one
Leads and mentors - happy to bring others along, share knowledge, review code
Proper testing culture - if it's not tested, it doesn't work
No shortcuts - no hacky fixes that'll bite you later
Agile/Scrum experienced - comfortable in structured team environments
